The Truth About Bridal Prices?

It is often asked, ''why do Bridal Makeup/Hair prices differ to regular appointments?''

The truth is listed below, there are many factors that are important to consider as they play a major part in ensuring the artist can perform the services you require.

As a Makeup artist I dedicate major time into ensuring your day is perfect, my aim is to be professional and transparent, so its important that you know:

----------

The Products

- The products used are expensive, luxurious and high end which are costly to stock.

- Natural does not imply applying/using less makeup/product. In most instances, the artist will use more product to improve the look of natural beauty in order to achieve a natural look.

- The duration of wedding runs longer than other events, including early morning preparation to late nights of dancing and crying, meaning the artist must use more products to set and prolong the wear of makeup

The Service

- Bridal bookings incur longer working hours, without breaks, due to strict times for completion.

- Heavily pressured and stressful working conditions as a result of the larger-scale events with no time for error and corrections.

- Extremely early mornings force the artist to rearrange family dynamics and previous evening plans including work/clients, social and domestic duties, for example, feeding the family earlier, putting the family to sleep earlier, to ensure the artist is able to rest early in preparation for a 3am alarm. This causes inconvenience to others in addition to the artist, and prevents the artists from earning/working the prior evening.

- Busy conditions are difficult to operate in, frequently uncomfortable due to improper client seating and elevation, bad table sizing for hair/makeup set up, and poor lighting causes serious back and foot pain from hours of work making unique movements to reach kit and client.
Additionally, wedding preparations are typically hectic, frequently with children running, which poses a serious risk of kit/lights damage.

- Ensuring Bridal makeup photographs well necessitates extreme attention to detail and perfection for flawless results, with no room for mistakes or alterations.

- Bridal hair/makeup is considered a premium, luxury service, naturally when providing a luxury service, the artist must conduct themselves in a manner that supports their service, mirrors their pricing and business conduct as the client pays for their professionalism, expertise and skill. Thus, the client expectations regarding costs for such luxury services must be realistic.

- A dedicated period of time is required for an artist to produce their greatest work. Weddings and preparations run on extremely tight schedules resulting in great pressure on artists where they must execute the same level of work in a shorter amount of time than it usually takes them to achieve perfection.

- Unlike weddings regular hair/makeup appointments for events have greater flexibility with timing, allowing time to fix and change the looks. Weddings can not be delayed, therefor the artist must deliver the service flawlessly on their first attempt.
Due to having only one opportunity to perform their service without the possibility of alterations, the artist is presented with significant danger to their reputation. Increased commercial risk for artists inevitably results in higher costs as there is more at stake.

It is important to consider that the client can also contribute to the need to alter the makeup, for examples: moving, chatting, smudging, failing to consider the artist's advice, which results in disliking the look, lateness, miscommunication, incorrect preparation, and wearing the makeup incorrectly.

Behind The Scene

- Bridal preparation locations can be far away, resulting in longer travel time meaning while traveling the artist is losing out on hours of potential earnings.

- Fuel, parking costs, wear and tear on the vehicle and assistant artists costs are a major expense to consider to ensure the logistics are smooth on the day.

- Most people hope to get paid for the time they invest into jobs, a Makeup Artist takes time to pack the kit, unpack it at the venue/location, pack it again to take home, unpack it again to sanitise it, then pack it again for the next client which timely meaning the artist can not use this time to generate income.

- Artist are required to take special and continuous training and courses, these can be expensive and majorly time consuming. Constant practice is also necessary which is time consuming and costly

- Artists must enrol in specialised, ongoing training programmes, which are costly and extremely time consuming. Additionally, ongoing practise is required, along with making of content for the artist portfolio and the clients look-book which is majorly time consuming, and can be costly for the artist as practice usually means artists has to work for free with investment into travelling, models, product usage and time.

- The upkeep of website, social media, photography, editing, creating preparation schedules tailored to you, creating quotes, content, and marketing is another major cost and time consuming task which enables the artist to provide bridal services.

- Bridal artists must lift large cases and kits up stairs at numerous venues, homes and locations, which puts strain on our bodies.

- Bridal enquiries, quotes and consultations require lot of admin work including contracts & correspondence which are major time consuming activities

Safety

- Attending bridal bookings and trials can pose a greater risk on the artist due to frequently entering homes, rooms and locations alone and outnumbered by unfamiliar people which poses a risk on safety, but also health concerns depending on working conditions and environments as well as damage or theft to their personal belongings and kit, potential risk of car theft and loss of items that can not be returned to them.
